Intro - Focus Attention
- Q. Why do believers sometimes choose to ignore God’s Word?
- Give time to answer.
- The temptation of the flesh, peer pressure, don’t believe that God knows what He is talking about, etc.
- Q. What are some possible consequences of doing so?
- Discuss.
- Broken relationships, a lack of peace, legal trouble, discontentment, anxiety, frustration, eternal judgement, etc.
- Today we will see how God sent Jeremiah to accuse the people of ignoring God’s word and turning to false idols and to warn them of the coming judgement on their sins.
- Context:
- Jeremiah 2 is full of references to how God had protected, delivered, and blessed the Israelites and specifically the people of Judah. Unfortunately it also shows how the people turned away from the Lord and exchanged their worship of God for the worship of idols. The result of this rebellion against God is His righteous judgement on their sin.
- Jeremiah 3-6 continues to demonstrate the sinfulness of Judah and the constant warning of God’s judgement, followed with His promise of restoration if they would turn back to Him. Sadly they continued to reject the Lord and followed false prophets who said everything was going just fine.
- So as we study Jeremiah 2:1-13 we are going to see the dangers of drifting away from God and His love.

What does this passage tell me about God?
- God speaks to His people (Jer 2:2).
- God remembers everything we have done (Jer 2:2).
- God protected Israel (Jer 2:3).
- God delivered and blessed the Israelites (Jer 2:6-7).
- God judges the sin of the world (Jer 2:9).
- God is the source of living water (Jer 2:13).
What does this passage tell me about man?
- Man can start strong (Jer 2:2).
- Man can make stupid decisions (Jer 2:5).
- Man easily forgets all that God has done (Jer 2:6).
- Man’s sin perverts the goodness of God (Jer 2:7).
- Leadership isn’t immune to rebelling against God ( Jer 2:8).
- Sin corrupts and continues for generations (Jer 2:9).
- Man’s sin is foolish and never satisfies (Jer 2:10-13).
What does this passage mean FOR my life?
- I need to count my blessings and remember all that God has done for me. God’s grace and love is overwhelming.
- I need to surround myself with people who are pointing me to God and all His amazing works.
- I need to remain faithful to God, continuing to seek Him no matter what everyone else is doing
- I need to wake up to the foolishness of man’s sin. False idols will never satisfy and only leads to death and judgement
